Franklin Recreation Meeting December 3, 2018

 

 

Participants: Bridget Thompson, Bridgette Favreau, Stacy Godin, Stephanie Ho, Dawn Fournier, Paula Tremblay, Jes Alexant

 

Bridget called the meeting to order at 7:15 p.m..

 

Public Comment

        There was an email from the Highgate Athletic Director about indoor soccer for U10 girls. Many of the girls who played soccer also play basketball and the schedules interfere. Bridget will respond to the message.

        Jes Alexant emailed and is interested in helping with a cross country ski trail (see later in minutes for further discussion with Jes on this subject).

        MVU/Taylor Coppenrath is hosting a basketball clinic for 2nd-8th graders. Information went home from school and will be shared with coaches.

        Is the port-o-let still at the fields? Bridget will check.

        Missing soccer pictures were located. Bridget left at school to distribute.

 

Library Updates

The tree lighting went well. Discussion about where library trustees will be located to hand out books at the Polar Express.

 

Rec Director Updates

        There is a new concussion form from the CDC for all kids participating in sports to sign.

        Several coaches need to renew their concussion training. Dawn will follow up.  

 

Approve Meeting Minutes

Bridget motioned to approve the meeting minutes from November 26. Stacy seconded. The motion passed.

 

Treasurer’s Report

No report.

 

Athletics

Pickleball:

        Donna Blouin agreed via Facebook message to be the point person for this activity.

        Bridget will talk with the SelectBoard to get approval to use the Town Hall for this activity.

        Equipment needs are as follows:

        Four paddles

        Indoor balls

        Net and next stand

        Tape to outline court

        A tentative start date of the first week of January was selected.

        To begin, pickleball will be planned for Thursdays from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m..

        Bridget motioned to spend up to $400 on pickleball equipment. Stephanie seconded, and the motion passed. Bridgette will select and purchase the equipment. 

Volleyball (added to agenda):

        Stephanie will confirm that the school can be used and fill out a Building Use form.

        Once approval is secured, volleyball will be advertised.

        A tentative start date of the first week of January was selected. 

Cross Country Skiing (added to agenda):

        Skis

        Discussion about location of skis purchased by Franklin Recreation for the first winter carnival and where to best store them.

        Jes would be willing to loan out skis from his personal collection for residents to use on a cross country ski trail.

        Perhaps some of the remainder of the RiseVT mini grant could be used to purchase more skis.

        What is the best/easiest/safest way to loan skis to the public?

        Trail

        Jes would be willing to lead a group of approximately five people to lay out a cross country ski trail.

        Need approval from landowners for trail to cross their land.

        Trail grooming could be done by a telemark skier or by a snowmobile.

        Jes would really like to get young people involved and interested in cross country skiing. 

        Advertising - Jes will ski in the area he’s proposing for the trail and will take pictures that can be shared on Facebook and via email.

Field Updates:

        No change.

Basketball:

        Game Schedules are loaded in google calendar.  Coaches need to share with their teams. Practices need to be added.

        Discussion about gym time and blackout dates.

        K/1/2 teams were selected. Dawn will notify coaches. 

        Extra apparel will be sent out and due back this week. 

        Dawn is working to schedule pictures with Cold Hollow Photography.

Soccer (added to agenda):

        Bridget motioned to pay soccer referees $15 per game. Stacy seconded. The motion passed.

        Referees for the 2018 soccer season were Corey Bertrand, Tom Gates and Sarah Gates. 

 

 

Programming

Tree Lighting:

        163 people (84 adults, 79 children) attended the tree lighting. The majority were Franklin residents.

        Event feedback has been positive.

        Santa was a nice addition. 

        The Girl Scouts led the caroling.

        The librarian’s story was well attended.

        The hot chocolate went quickly.

        Kids played in snow during and after the lighting. 

        Residents took time to linger and visit.

Polar Express and Lighted Parade: Friday, December 14, starting at 5:00 p.m.

        “Rides” are filling up. There is space on the first ride and a few spaces on most of the other “rides”

        Eight vehicles have signed up for the lighted parade

        Stacy will post a call for elves on Facebook.

        Discussion about decorations needed. 

        Bridget will ask Nancy about setting up for the movie. Stephanie will find the movie.

Winter Carnival: Tentative date of Saturday, February 2 from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m..

        Stephanie will confirm with school and fill out a building use form.

        Bridget to work on flyer.

        Discussion about what types of events to offer.

        Discussion about the dinner. Possibly chili and chowder with bread and dessert.

        Volunteers to bring food.

        Discussion about whether to charge for the meal.

 

Town Report and Budget

Bridget and Bridgette will create a draft to share at the next meeting.

 

Grants

Postponed until the next meeting.
